I can't get over this whole trend of "Extreme Couponing." It's crazy. Long story short, I think that these people are mentally ill hoarders who are missing something in their life, and they're filling it with cans of Beefaroni.
New to the concept? Here's the idea behind extreme couponing: people combine coupons with customer loyalty programs and in-store sales to get deep discounts on their shopping. Deep as in they'll have an initial total of $250 in groceries, and they'll end up paying $0.10 for everything because of coupons, etc. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand that the television show takes the most extreme of the extreme couponers, and that most people are probably not that bad. And I also understand that many people are on a very tight budget.
But look at coupons in general... typically, food coupons are for processed foods. For example, it is not uncommon to see coupons for Chef Boyardee canned foods, Betty Crocker baking mixes, and other processed food products that, let's face it, no one needs to eat. These individuals not only buy one package, they'll often buy 12+ packages in order to take full advantage of their coupons and discounts. The TV show enters the peoples' homes to show their stockpile of canned and packaged foods, and it's both amazing and disturbing.
I can somewhat understand the people who stock up on things like soap, shampoo, deodorant, etc., but these people have like 100 packages of all of them! Who could possibly use it all? It's crazy.
Crazy, I tell you. These people are being lauded for being nuts.
Extreme Couponing is hoarding.
very enjoyable post Laura!
