Many healthy foods are a bit of an acquired taste. One of these such foods is Greek yogurt, especially the plain kind. It's got a very strong, sourish flavor that many people can't stand. Chris is one of them. I, on the other hand, have eaten enough of it simply because it's good for me, that it's now one of my favorite foods.
Why Greek yogurt, you ask? Well, because for one, I have a really sensitive stomach when it comes to preservatives, and this type of yogurt literally contains milk and cultures. And that's it. No preservatives, no added sugars, nothing! It's fantastic. And another thing that makes it great is that it's exceptionally high in protein. I don't worry about not consuming enough protein on most days, but I do worry about not eating enough protein to keep me full. One serving of nonfat, plain Greek yogurt has roughly 14 grams of protein. Fantastic!
I tend to eat whatever brand is cheaper at Whole Foods: Chobani or Fage. Sometimes Stonyfield Farms. They're all good to me. I've learned to use it as a substitute for butter (I read online that you shouldn't sub more than 1/2 of the butter/oil in a recipe for it, but I've subbed it all, and been very pleased with my results), and as a delicious sweet treat ... read on...
Chocolate Yogurt Dessert
1 c. 0% fat Greek Yogurt
1 tbsp. cocoa (NOT hot cocoa mix, just plain baking cocoa)
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1 tsp. agave syrup (I like the amber colored syrup) or a pinch of sugar-alternative
You can also add in nuts, or to make it even more superfood dense, I add in flaxseeds and chia seeds. I can imagine that this would turn some people off because of the texture of the flax and chia, but it doesn't bother me.
What is chia?
This sounds yummy and I am totally trying it - need a healthy choco dessert and I am hooked on chia seeds so all the better!
