Surprise!

So, earlier this summer, I pulled a little tiny carrot out of the garden. Tiny. So tiny, it looked like the anemic cousin of one of those super duper hot peppers. This thing was ridiculous. It really just looked like a puny root.

So today, when I pulled THIS out of the ground, I was pretty psyched!!This carrot appeared out of nowhere! I'm pretty sure that our plentiful squash and watermelon vines effectively hid the carrot fronds, so we had no idea the little bugger was down there!

Today, we pulled out all of the old watermelon and squash vines, as well as the tomato plants. We also put down some worm compost and planted five rows of spinach and two rows of lettuce. We're not sure how well it will grow, but we've got a whole bunch of seeds that most likely won't grow next year, so if nothing happens to these seeds, we're not out anything.

I'm hoping that the worm compost gives them that extra boost they might need to grow in the cooler temps. Worm composting, you ask? It's a fabulous way to not only get rid of a little cardboard and veggie scraps, but it's an amazing way to create your own organic, FREE fertilizer! We adopted the worms from a dear friend who moved to California. My only goal with these little buggers is to keep them alive for at least one year! Finger's cross!
